The Energy Market Authority (EMA) has announced plans to expand and enhance the Pulau Ubin microgrid, providing residents and businesses in the area with a cleaner and more reliable source of electricity. As part of this expansion, the microgrid will serve as a testbed for two innovative solutions – the Solar Green Roof and Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRB) Energy Storage System (ESS) – to be implemented by 2023.

The Solar Green Roof will be installed near the Main Village of the island, and according to EMA, it is expected to reduce the ambient temperature of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules by 3°C to 8°C and increase the efficiency of the solar PV system by approximately 1.5% to 4%.

To enhance the reliability of electricity supplied by the Solar Green Roof, the VRB ESS will be employed. EMA emphasizes that ESS is a crucial technology for managing solar intermittency and ensuring grid reliability by actively addressing supply and demand mismatches caused by changing weather conditions. The VRB ESS employs a smart pump to regulate the flow of electrolyte, increasing the ESS's efficiency by up to 3%.

Furthermore, the National Parks Board (NParks) will extend the microgrid beyond the Main Village to Kampong Sungei Durian, benefiting an additional 13 households on the island. Currently, the grid serves more than 30 households. This expansion is expected to increase the number of households benefiting from the grid to 43.
